Engineering CAD Technicians are everywhere! They work directly with engineers and technologists to design, plan, draw, and create products, machines, factories, buildings, highways, transit systems, and more! Engineering CAD Technicians use computer aided design software to produce and analyze designs and to simulate and test machines, structures or systems. Their drawings act as the foundation of communication between all parties including the engineers, builders, and clients – providing the link between science and commercial applications.

Graduates of this program find work in engineering firms, CAD-specific workgroups, homebuilders, construction companies, engineering consultants, all levels of government, and other related industries. Their position is one of a skilled assistant to engineers or technologists, who possesses a broad knowledge of the architectural and / or engineering disciplines. Program Outline

The fundamental ability of students to operate and work with a computer is experienced as various software programs are discovered. Proficiency in the use of Microsoft Windows, Microsoft Word, Microsoft Excel, Microsoft PowerPoint and the Internet gradually builds as students discover how this software is utilized in the architectural and engineering workplace.

Build Information Modeling (BIM) is an organizational, philosophical, and strategic change that is often confusing to staff. BIM is not a software, though it is enabled by software. BIM is not a tool, though tools exist. BIM is not even a methodology in the true sense of the word. BIM is philosophy. How BIM is embraced within a firm is largely left up to those interpreting this philosophy into practice. Adding to traditional AEC practices, BIM enhances the engineering process by adding the dimensions of time, cost, spatial relationships, green needs, usability, and even the manufacture of component parts. BIM requires enormous data intensity and a devout adoption of new communication practices across a firm and its partners. The GeT BIM library is designed to educate staff in all aspects of BIM including practices in various disciplines and job functions.

The creation of technical documentation that is commonly associated with the workplace is discovered as students prepare to interact with others in the design office.  Document content, organization, style, and the use of visuals are utilized in the preparation of letters, memos, e-mail, personal resumes and short reports. Students will give oral presentations during the course in support of written communication.
Technical mathematics will identify the fundamentals of mathematics, enabling the students to solve technological problems.  The students will acquire knowledge in topics including Arithmetic of Numbers, introduction to Algebra, Plane & Solid Geometry and Right Triangle Trigonometric functions.

In this course the concepts of spatial relationships of points, lines and planes are discovered as they apply to technical drawing views.  Students are required to solve spatial problems. Coursework focuses on drawing conventions and procedures used in the preparation of technical drawings.  The foundational principles are identified to draw orthographically created multi-views, and auxiliary views. Pictorial and perspective view creation will also be identified as applied to the drawings of architecture and engineering.  The ability to draw complete drawings using accepted line work, lettering, layout and dimensioning techniques, while adhering to a technical drafting standard will provide the student with the context for all drawings used in the architectural and engineering disciplines.
The fundamental concepts of differential levelling, measurement of linear and horizontal angles by use of theodolites and other equipment will be investigated. This course builds the practical understanding and usage of practices and procedures used in the field of surveying. Knowledge acquired by the student will be applied to developing plans and profiles, cross-sectional views, contour maps, and traverse.
A professional set of architectural drawings will be created in this course.  Through hands on experience and instructor guidance the students will be expected to demonstrate proficiency in the use of the AutoCAD program as they develop a working set of architectural drawings for a residential application.  This course will give the students an opportunity to design and create an original set of architectural drawings.
Technical mathematics will identify the fundamentals of mathematics, enabling the students to solve technological problems.  The students will acquire knowledge in topics including trigonometric functions, vectors, triangle solutions, linear and quadratic equations.
This course examines the products, materials and methods that are used in construction projects. The CSI specification form that emulates the order, in which construction occurs, will be introduced. Students will discover and select the specific materials and methods of assembly as used in the construction of buildings, structures and industrial projects.
The specifications for the construction of architectural projects will be discovered and applied to the Construction Specifications Institute-CSI format.  Students will develop their knowledge and skills in regards to creating and understanding specifications, drawings and contracts as legal documents.
Autodesk Inventor is a parametric CAD software offers an easy-to-use set of tools for 3D mechanical design, documentation, and product simulation. Digital Prototyping with Inventor helps you design and validate your products before they are built to deliver better products, reduce development costs, and get to market faster.
Working with mechanical parts in any industry, requires a high level of knowledge and adherence to fundamental design principles. Students will learn the communication skills needed to produce mechanical part and assembly drawings for a machine. With the information displayed in standard industry views, and with the precision achieved from various part manufacturing processes a complete set of machine drawings will be produced.
Students will calculate the stress, strain and deformation in structural steel frame construction. They will apply the basics of structural statics to simple beams and structurally determinate frames. Student will learn to calculate the stresses for steel columns, beams, base plates and foundations. They will be familiar with the standard steel cross sections and calculating the strength characteristic of element such as moment of inertia. After completing this course student will learn about the fundamental concepts of beam and column design. Detail drawings of the connections will practice in this course. By completing the final project student will be familiar with structural theory, design and drawing.
The fundamental concepts of contour lines, transferring the three dimensional map to semi-two dimensional topographical drawing, profile views of topographical maps and cartographical symbols will be investigated in this course. This course builds the practical understanding and usage of surveying data used in the topographical drawings. Knowledge acquired by the student will be applied to road design and find many options that influences the road path. Profiles and cross-sectional views then help the designer to estimate the soil works of each road path scenario. Contour maps will draw three dimensionally for better understanding of topographical drawings.
Familiarity of piping design specifications and components provides students with the first major step in the creation of process piping drawings.  Students will learn methods of drawing and inserting technical data appropriate to specific processes. Consideration will be given to compatibility and safety standards associated with various pressure ratings. Efficiency of pipe routing with regard to distance and process flow will be considered in various projects.
Students will experience ethical behaviour traits through the use of role-play, case studies, and classroom presentations as applicable to the workplace. This course is designed to relate the impact of technological change in society, and the subsequent adjustment that ethical behaviour has on individuals, especially co-workers, and other staff within the design team.
This course provides the basic introduction to project management concepts, principles and models. It deals with the fundamental knowledge in Project Management such us setting targets, allocating resources, identifying critical paths, and monitoring actual performance against targets.
Revit building design software is specifically built for Building Information Modeling (BIM), empowering design and construction professionals to bring ideas from concept to construction with a coordinated and consistent model-based approach. Revit is a single application that includes features for architectural design, MEP and structural engineering, and construction.

Create even the most complex building systems more accurately and efficiently with Building Information Modeling (BIM) tools designed for mechanical, electrical, and plumbing (MEP) engineers.

Throughout this course students will become familiar with various engineering contracts and the legal system in Alberta. Students will be able to comprehend engineering contracts and documents and associate the limitations to contractual agreements by the end of this course. While contracts, specifications and drawings collectively become legal documents, students will be discovering the potential contractual difficulties that may arise when not properly prepared.
A professional set of architectural drawings of a commercial building with plumbing and HVAC will be drafted in this course. Students will be expected to demonstrate proficiency in the use of AutoCAD & Revit MEP in the development of a working set of drawings. The working drawings in this course will be dynamic and complex including the development of landscape features.
Students will learn about Alberta third system of surveying. By completing this course they will be familiar with the subdivision methods in Alberta province. Main theoretical definitions such meridian, ranges and townships help students to find exact location of a field on internet. They will spend the entire course applying their knowledge of 2-D AutoCAD drafting to reproduce master drawings of legal subdivision plans. This course is meant to be an accurate snapshot of what they will be required to do as a Drafting Technologist in a consulting firm. In taking this course, they will learn knowledge essential in the workplace.
The students will examine the mechanical services and electrical services, utilities that must be incorporated into building design. Purposes, needs and wants will be identified and examined, for building services and utilities while remaining compliant with the appropriate codes. This course will also encompass how needs and wants within a building design are limited by construction practicalities.
In this course student will learn about pipeline and pipe network design. Study different distribution system and storage tanks. They will learn about pipe line characteristics. The fundamental concepts of fluid mechanics and head loss will be investigated. Knowledge acquired by the student will be applied to developing plans in pipe line transmission.
